XML sitemap checker
Find a site's XML sitemap, count its addresses and spot problems that make search engines ignore entries.
Choosing a check opens its page. With the keyboard, use the arrow keys, then press Enter.
What we check
Enter a site to find its sitemap (from robots.txt, then /sitemap.xml and /sitemap_index.xml), or the full address of a sitemap. We read the file, decompressing .gz files, and check it against the sitemaps.org protocol:
- the root is
<urlset>or<sitemapindex>with the sitemap namespace; - each
<loc>is a full http:// or https:// address on the same host as the sitemap; lastmoduses W3C date format, andchangefreqandpriorityhave valid values;- there are no duplicates, and no more than 50,000 entries.
We show how many addresses there are, the first 50, and example line numbers for each problem. For a sitemap index we list the child sitemaps, each with a link to check it.
Limits
We read up to 10 MB (after decompressing), stop after 3 seconds, and never fetch the addresses listed in the sitemap.
Frequently asked questions
How do you find the sitemap?
If you enter a site, we read its robots.txt for Sitemap lines, then try /sitemap.xml and /sitemap_index.xml. If you enter the full address of a sitemap, we check that file. We fetch at most three candidates.
Why must addresses be on the same host?
The sitemap protocol says a sitemap may only list addresses on the host it is served from (and below its folder). Search engines may ignore addresses on other hosts unless you have proved you own both sites.
What is a sitemap index?
A file that lists other sitemaps, for sites with more than 50,000 addresses or more than 50 MB of sitemap. We list the child sitemaps with a link to check each one; we don't fetch them all at once.
Do you check every address in the sitemap?
We read every entry (up to 50,000) and check how it is written: full address, same host, date format, duplicates. We don't visit the addresses themselves.
Are .gz sitemaps supported?
Yes. We decompress them as we read, up to 10 MB, which also protects against files that expand to an enormous size.
