About your IP address

An IP address is the number that identifies your connection on the internet. Every website you visit sees it, because that is where the website sends its reply. Most home and mobile connections share one public address between all the devices behind the same router.

This page shows the address our server sees. If you use a VPN, a proxy or a privacy relay, you will see the address of that service rather than your own connection.

IPv4 and IPv6

IPv4 addresses look like 203.0.113.10. IPv6 addresses are longer and use colons, like 2001:db8::10. Many connections have both; which one a website sees depends on whether the website supports IPv6.

Frequently asked questions

Can a website find my home address from my IP?

No. An IP address can usually be linked to a country and the company that provides your connection, and sometimes a nearby city, but not to a street or a house. Location estimates from an IP address are often wrong.

Why does the country look wrong?

The country shows where your network is registered or routed, not where you are. Mobile networks, VPNs, company networks and privacy relays often appear in another country. We look this up on our own server from IPinfo's free data, and don't store the result.

Why does my IP address change?

Many internet providers assign addresses dynamically, so your address can change when your router restarts or after a period of time. Mobile connections change address frequently.

Do you store my IP address?

Not for this check. The result is worked out for your request only and is never saved or cached, and details marked as from your browser are calculated on this page and never sent to us. Like any website, we keep an address for a limited time only if it is used to break our rate limits or is blocked, to protect the service.

What is the user agent?

It is a line of text your browser sends to every website, naming the browser and operating system. Websites use it to adjust pages for your device.

  • Website Health Check

Run the main website, DNS and email checks on one site at once and get a short report, area by area, with links to the full results.

  • Website Down Checker

Check whether a website is responding right now, from our server: status, response time, redirects, IP addresses and HTTPS.

  • SSL Certificate Checker

Check whether a site's HTTPS certificate is valid and trusted, which names it covers, and when it expires.

  • HTTP Header Checker

See the HTTP status and every response header a website sends, for the final page and each redirect on the way.

  • Security Header Checker

Check which browser security headers a website sends (HSTS, CSP, X-Content-Type-Options, Referrer-Policy and Permissions-Policy) and what they do.

  • Redirect Checker

Follow a web address through every redirect, with the status code, destination and timing of each hop.
